Prepping your Skin

Before the tanning session, make sure you exfoliate and moisturize 24 hours before your spray tan visit, paying particular attention to elbows, knees, ankles and problem dry areas.

For best results, waxing and shaving should be done at least 48 hours prior to spray tan. This allows the pores time to close. Dotting in pores may appear if not adhered to. Nail and hair appointments should also be scheduled prior to your spray tan appointment.

For the entire 24 hours prior to your spray tan appointment avoid using bar soaps, high pH shower products (Dove Soap), oil based products or in-shower moisturizers. These products may act as a barrier against your skin and can prevent the fast acting tanning agents to develop.

Before your spray tan session make sure your skin is clean and dry. Keep in mind that too much moisture causes tanning solution to slide right off the skin. Do not apply moisturizing lotion except in light amounts on your knees and elbows - the areas where tanner generally absorbs too much. This helps stop these areas from getting too dark.

Do not apply moisturizer, perfume, deodorant or makeup on the day of your appointment. A moisturizer for your lips should be applied before your spray tan to act as a barrier to the solution.

Wear dark, loose fitting clothing to your session. Wearing tight clothes may cause you to experience "rub off" on the inside of your clothes.

Please remove all jewelry prior to your appointment. You may disrobe to your comfort level during your visit; you may wear a bikini for tan lines, bra & panties, topless, or completely in the buff. We require all males clients to wear briefs during their spray tan.

Caring for your Tan

Wear dark loose clothing after your appointment. Wearing tight clothes may cause you to experience "rub off" on the inside of your clothes leaving marks. Do not wear socks and sneakers, flipflops are best.

Do not attempt to blend flaws or fix spots that may occur from rubbing or water splashes due to hand washing. These flaws usually only affect the bronzer and your tan will almost always even out any marks after your first shower.

Shower lightly in cold - lukewarm water for 45-60 seconds ONLY after your desired development time. Use plain water, do not use shower gels, scrubs, shampoos or loofah during the first 24 hours after your session. The color run off is also just the bronzer used as a color guide so that the technician can see that she is applying your tan evenly. This color is not your tan.

Pat your skin dry. Do not rub or scrub your skin. Wait until after your first post-tan shower to exercise. Your new tan needs to fully develop before excessive sweating. Scrubbing, exfoliating, shaving and waxing will cause the tan to fade more quickly. Swimming and soaking in pools, hot tubs or salt water dry out your skin and shorten the life of your tan.

Moisturize everyday after your session. The more you moisturize the longer your tan will last. Try our favorite Norvell Boost Tan Extending Moisturizer to lengthen the life of your tan.

After day 5, exfoliate with a soft body polish on a daily basis, to help your skin absorb even more moisturizer and keep it looking and feeling gorgeous. This also helps the tan fade naturally, rather than in patches.

Hair Removal

While excessive body hair will not impair the ability of the spray tan to stick to your skin, shaving soon after receiving a spray tan can be detrimental. In fact, shaving soon after this procedure often results in the color flaking off from your skin. As spray tans can become expensive, most individuals who receive them want to ensure their longevity.

To ensure that your hair follicles are rested and not inflamed or damaged prior to your spray tan, any hair removal should be done at least 24 hours prior.

If you have to shave the day of your spray tan session, please apply cold water to the areas to help close your pores to eliminate brown spotting.

If you have sensitive skin and you opt for body waxing, you may need to allow a little more time before your spray tan to ensure you achieve the best possible outcome.
